Stammering

2 years 6 months – 5 years

Refer to Speech and Language Therapy, if the child is presenting with one of the following: 

  • struggles to be fluent when they talk
  • sounds or words appear to get stuck 
  • repeats sounds and words as they speak
  • AND at least 1 of the following:
    • family history of stammering 
    • has been stammering for 4 months since onset.

5 – 7 years

Refer to Speech and Language Therapy, if the child does not meet exclusion criteria* below and is presenting with one of the following: 

  • struggles to be fluent when they talk
  • sounds or words appear to get stuck 
  • repeats sounds and words as they speak
  • AND at least 1 of the following:
    • the stammering is having an impact on the child 
    • the child expresses they would like support for their stammer.

*Exclusion criteria: 

  • There is no impact or child does not want support.

7 - 18 years

Refer to Speech and Language Therapy, if the child or young person does not meet exclusion criteria* below and is presenting with one of the following: 

  • struggles to be fluent when they talk
  • sounds or words appear to get stuck 
  • repeats sounds and words as they speak
  • AND at least 1 of the following:
    • the stammering is having an impact on the child
    • the child expresses they would like support for their stammer. 

*Exclusion criteria: 

  • There is no impact or child does not want support.   
  • Previously received advice, support and strategies for their stammer and there has been no significant changes with their stammer. Child to use strategies previously advised.
