Deafness

Referrals should be made by health professionals and qualified teachers of deaf children and young people.  

Refer if….

  • there is a late diagnosis of hearing loss/deafness (report to be included with referral) and there is evidence of speech, language or communication needs.
  • the deafness (unilateral/bilateral, sensori -neural or persisting conductive) is impacting on the development of the child or young person's: 
    • speech sounds   
    • spoken language development   
    • understanding of spoken language
  • there are concerns with the development or understanding of sign language for BSL families
  • there is a diagnosis of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) and there is evidence of speech, language  or communication needs
  • children of Deaf adults (CODAs) with an identified speech,  language or communication need
