Stay safe and well in the hot weather

Red Weather Warning - extreme heat

An Amber Heat Health Alert is currently in effect across the East of England, including Hertfordshire, Central Bedfordshire, Essex and Luton.

Temperatures are expected to increase further and remain high during the course of this week. A Red Heat Health Alert has been issued and will come into effect from 1:00am on 24 June until 11:00pm on 25 June 2026.

This change reflects an increased risk that the hot weather could affect people's health and wellbeing, particularly those who are more vulnerable to the effects of heat.

Hot weather can have a greater impact on older people, babies and young children, people living with long-term health conditions, and others who may be more vulnerable.

The NHS is encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to stay well during the hot weather, including looking after family members, friends and neighbours who may need extra support.

  • Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Have plenty of cold drinks and avoid caffeine and hot drinks
  • Eat cold foods, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content.
  • Keep your environment cool – keep windows that are exposed to the sun closed during the day, and open windows at night when the temperature has dropped.
  • Close curtains that receive morning or afternoon sun, however, care should be taken with metal blinds and dark curtains that can absorb heat.
  • Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment – they generate heat.
  • If you are going out during this time, cover up with suitable clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen liberally and re-apply frequently
  • if you are going to do a physical activity (for example exercise or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the early morning or the evening.
