We're delighted to share that Catherine McArevey, community staff nurse for HCT’s Welwyn Hatfield Integrated Care Team, Practice Education Facilitator, and a proud Queen’s Nurse, has been elected as the mayor of Dacorum. Catherine has steadily made her way up to the role, having elected as a local councillor for Dacorum Borough Council in 2023 before being elected as deputy mayor last year.

In the annual council meeting on 14 May councillors nominated Catherine, praising her longstanding voluntary work, her status as a Queen’s Nurse and her experience as a community nurse, particularly regarding her safeguarding experience, having previously held a strategic safeguarding role in the Herts and West Essex ICB.

Catherine says: “I feel honoured and humbled to have been selected particularly as a nurse and hope that I am a good role model for the profession. I also hope that other nurses and health professionals are inspired to use their skills outside of work to support their own communities as well as influencing policy by engaging with politics. This can be as simple as contacting local councillors to raise issues in the area.

“I’m particularly looking forward to highlighting the work of the voluntary sector in Dacorum and the wide range of organisations that together make a real difference to the entire community. I’m also looking forward to using my knowledge of health and community to make the borough a greater place for all, regardless of circumstances. I am particularly keen to encourage more unity within the community. I have already made links with the mayor (Burgermeister) in our twin town Neu-Isenburg with a view to increasing collaboration between our young people with our European neighbours. I also want members of the community to feel special for all their valuable contributions, so I intend to visit local nursing homes to have a cup of tea and a chat with residents, as well as participate in activities in local schools to support young people.“
