The transformation of a paediatric audiology suite in Watford has received national recognition for its thoughtful and child-friendly design.
The team behind the transformation of our Paediatric Audiology Suite at Watford’s Peace Children’s Centre was nominated for Best Interior Design Project (Refurbishment) at the Building Better Health Care Awards. The project was among dozens of noteworthy submissions nominated for the awards which bring healthcare leaders, architects, designers and suppliers together to celebrate outstanding healthcare design, technology and patient care.
The refurbishment, completed earlier this year, reimagined the outdated audiology suite to address issues of acoustic control, layout, and accessibility. The new space combines technical precision with a warm, welcoming atmosphere designed specifically for young patients – particularly those with additional needs.
Charlie Cadogan, HCT Operations Lead Specialist, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that though our Paediatric Audiology Suite didn’t win, it has received this recognition.
“It’s not easy stepping into a clinical environment for the first time for anyone and especially for children suffering hearing difficulties.
“Our aim was to design a space where children feel safe, calm, and valued – and where staff can deliver excellent care in an environment that supports them.”
Delivered in partnership with Ian Nunn of Silk Partnership Ltd., GD Construction, and AGS Noise, the project exemplifies the power of collaboration between clinical, design, and technical experts. Weekly progress updates and joint planning ensured the refurbishment was completed on time, within budget, and with sustainability at its core – including responsible waste recycling throughout.
The suite’s soft lighting, natural tones, and carefully chosen materials create a soothing environment without overstimulation. Enhanced soundproofing and an improved spatial layout have also strengthened the quality of clinical assessments and staff workflow.
Brendan Giblin, Head of Capital Development said: “Being put forward for this award is a testament to how good design can truly transform healthcare environments. We are really grateful to our partners, GD Construction, Ian Nunn of Silk Partnership Ltd, and AGS Noise for ensuring that every element of the space was created with children’s wellbeing at heart.”
The award’s winners were announced at a ceremony last week in London.
