Are you ready for winter weather?

Some of us are more vulnerable to winter weather than others - such as older people, those that live alone, rough sleepers, and those with existing health conditions. But winter weather affects us all in some way, whether you are running a business, driving, using public transport or want to simply stay warm and avoid winter illness – there’s usually something you can do to be more prepared.

Weather Ready information

Being ready for winter weather can make a real difference. From preparing your home or business to taking care of yourself, your family and neighbours. There are some simple steps you can take to stay safe and healthy at this time of year on the Met Office’s WeatherReady webpages

Some things to consider doing now

  • Keeping warm - heat your home to at least 18°C, wear lots of thin layers, eat plenty of hot food and drinks
  • Avoid trips, slips and falls - wear good-fitting slippers with a good grip indoors and shoes with a good grip outside
  • Check on older neighbours or relatives - especially those living alone or who have serious illnesses to make sure they are safe, warm and well

If you’re over 50 years and need help staying warm and well during winter check out the ‘Keep Warm Keep Well’ leaflet (prepared by Age UK, The NHS and UK Health Security Agency). It contains information on keeping warm, looking after your health and financial support.
