National spotlight on two pioneering projects

Two of our pioneering projects - a staff wellbeing service and a ‘trailblazing’ children mental health support team - have been recognised nationally for their efforts to protect patients and embed safety.

Our staff wellbeing service and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities’ mental health support team (SEND MHST) were both finalists in the HSJ’s Patient Safety Award – the staff wellbeing service was shortlisted for ‘Staff wellbeing initiative of the year’ and the SEND MHST for ‘Best use of integrated care and partnership working in patient safety’.

Organised by the HSJ, the Patient Safety Awards celebrate teams and individuals from across the UK health and care sector who go above and beyond to improve patient safety. The awards were presented at a glamorous awards ceremony in Manchester Central following the HSJ Patient Safety Congress this week.

Chief Executive Elliot Howard-Jones said: “We couldn’t be prouder of both teams and the individuals involved for shining a light on the amazing work they are doing to deliver safe care to patients.

“As a community services trust, where our focus is on delivering care and support to people closer to home - safety is central to everything we do and we are continuously seeking innovative ways to deliver better healthcare.”

The trust’s staff wellbeing service regularly runs clinics where staff can access health advice and support, while our SEND MHST is the first MHST in the country to offer early intervention mental health support exclusively to its local SEND population.

Elliot continued: “Our SEND MHST service, which launched just six years, serves as a inspirational example of what can be achieved when you build on existing partnerships and bring together professionals, families and children with one clear vision to improve experience of children with SEND.

“While our staff wellbeing service demonstrates how by encouraging staff to prioritise their own health and wellbeing and by fostering a supportive working culture, where everyone feels valued and cared for, we can improve patient experiences and outcomes.  Thank you and well done to all!”

The Best Use of Integrated care and partnership working in patient safety award was presented to Northwest Kidney Network, Cheshire and Mersey Integrated Care System and Liverpool University Hospitals Group, and Cheshire and Mersey Biochemistry Network for the Core Kidney Initiative.

The Staff Wellbeing Initiative of the Year went to Humber Health Partnership for their project entitled ‘Psychological safety for internationally educated colleagues or the wellbeing of international nurses.’
