Information for professionals - sensory processing services
We offer a 3-tiered model of service delivery which includes universal, targeted and specialist support to children, families and schools across Hertfordshire.
Universal: For everyone
This is the first level of provision and does not require a referral. Support is delivered virtually through the "Understanding Children’s Sensory Preferences" workshop.
The aim of the workshop is to increase awareness of sensory processing and preferences. It provides practical advice and strategies that staff can use in school to support children and young people. The parent and school universal workshops can be accessed here.
After attending the workshop, schools are encouraged to implement the recommended strategies consistently for at least three months before seeking additional support.
We also offer virtual drop-in sessions where schools can discuss the individual needs of a child or young person with a sensory processing therapist.
Universal support for parents:
A universal workshop is also available for parents and carers. This can be accessed here.
Targeted: For some
This is the second level of provision for families and referral will be required. This can be completed by a parent or health/education professional.
The aim of the targeted support is to further develop knowledge on how to support and manage identified sensory processing differences which impact on daily tasks, using a goal-orientated and coaching approach. Please click here for further information on how targeted support is provided to families.
We are currently developing targeted workshops which will be available to schools across Hertfordshire from September 2025. Schools will be contacted when this training is available.

Specialist: For few
This is the third level of provision for families and school where the child or young person has a defined clinical need. Following targeted support, the child or young person’s sensory needs will be reviewed in collaboration with parents/carers. This review helps determine whether specialist support from the Sensory Processing Service is required.
Specialist support includes an individual assessment, which may take place at home or school. A sensory report will then be provided, outlining tailored recommendations and advice. If intervention is recommended, it may consist of up to six sessions. These can be:
- Direct (working with the child or young person), and/or
- Indirect (working with parents/carers or school staff)
Specialist intervention focuses on establishing person-centred goals that support participation in everyday school and home activities. Support is time-limited and grounded in evidence-based practice.
Not all children or young people will require specialist support. Many will successfully manage their sensory needs through the advice and strategies provided at the universal and targeted levels.
