Motor skills development

This session is for parents or carers of children aged between 4-8 years old who would like to understand more about their child’s motor development and how to support this. The session will share information about the typical ages when children develop different motor skills. It will explain how to break down an activity such as pulling on a jumper into simple steps to help your child complete this independently. You will also get advice on activities and simple things you can do at home to support your child’s motor development.

Smart Moves

This smart moves training is a virtual training for mainstream schools, which provides an introduction to implementing a motor skills development programme in school for children with coordination difficulties and related developmental disorders. Smart Moves is being successfully used within many Hertfordshire schools already.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Children from Reception to Key Stage 2
  • Children who have difficulties with the following: gross, fine motor and co-ordination, ball and
    balance skills.

WHY USE IT?

To improve motor skills. Schools have reported improvements seen in children’s confidence,
self-esteem, attention and behaviour.

HOW?

The Smart Moves Motor Skills Development Programme has 3 elements

  • Movement ability profile - to aid in the identification of abilities & difficulties
  • Bank of Activities which reflect the PE curriculum & use school resources, so there is
no need to purchase specialist equipment.
  • Manual & CD ROM, containing instructions, advice, certificates etc.
  • There is no purchase of equipment required but schools will need to purchase the
    Smart Moves Motor Skills Programme.
