East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust jointly run two consultant-led multi-disciplinary falls clinics every week.The purpose of the clinics is to provide multi-disciplinary (MDT) assessments of a patient’s risk of falling (falls risk), in line with local and national guidelines. Referrals can be made from the clinics for further medical investigations with follow up and provision of any home based therapy prevention measures, resource/equipment provision and rehabilitation.
There are two clinics running based at:
- The Lister Hospital in Stevenage on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm - 4pm, led by Dr E Lines and Dr C Rippingale
- The New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City on Friday mornings from 9am - 12 midday, led by Dr D Jain.

How the service is provided
The MDT team consists of three consultants who share the clinics, a senior occupational therapist, a senior physiotherapist and a technical instructor who provides ECG and BP recordings.
Who is eligible for the service
- Patients over the age of 65, registered with an East and North Herts GP
- Patients who have a recent history of falls in the community
- Patients recently discharged from an acute hospital/A&E following a fall.
- Patients reporting disturbances in balance and gait that are seen to be at high risk of falling by their GP.
What will happen at your appointment
Each patient who is referred will attend at the start of the clinic and leave following assessment from each clinician. The clinic concludes with a MDT meeting to discuss individual patients' assessments and collate any ongoing investigations/management plans. Following attendance at the clinic a letter will be sent to the patient and their GP detailing the outcome and planned interventions/ investigations.
