New study backs home anitbiotics treatment

Our Chief Medical Officer has welcomed the publication of a new University of East Anglia (UEA) study which confirms that IV antibiotics provided at home, rather than in clinical settings, improves patient experience, reduces pressures on beds and saves money for the NHS.

The trust worked with the UEA, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, HealthWatch Hertfordshire and Health Innovation East on the study which asked our Hospital at Home patients, clinicians and carers about their views on using IV antibiotics prepared and administered at home.

Dr Elizabeth Kendrick said: “We’re so pleased that we could be part of this important study which further strengthens the case for moving from hospital to community care, one of the government’s three transformational shifts as set out in the NHS 10 year plan.

“The study showed that not only were our patients and their families happy with the service and pleased they could be supported at home, it also highlighted the cost savings available to the NHS by providing this service at home - namely almost £4000 worth of savings available per patient when nurse-filled at-home treatment is offered compared to hospital treatment.

“We want to thank all the patients who took in this study. We hope the findings will be used to help the NHS continue to deliver high-quality care in the future.”
